Dental Emergencies- Ossian, IN
Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them—whether it's a sudden toothache, a broken tooth, or an injury to your mouth. At Ossian Smile Family Dentistry, we understand the urgent nature of these situations and are here to provide immediate care to alleviate pain and prevent further damage.
Common Dental Emergencies and Home Remedies
In all cases, these remedies are temporary solutions. It is crucial to call us for care as soon as possible to address the underlying issue.
Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria.
Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to alleviate pain and swelling.
Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help manage pain.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area.
If there is a piece of the tooth, save it in a container with saltwater.
Use a cold compress to reduce any swelling and discomfort until you can see a dentist.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Handle it gently without scrubbing.
Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket if possible; if not, place it in a container with milk or saliva.
See a dentist as soon as possible, ideally within 30 minutes.
Abscessed Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help drain the infection.
Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
Over-the-counter pain relievers can provide temporary relief until you can see a dentist.
Lost Filling or Crown
If a filling is lost, chew sugar-free gum to fill the cavity temporarily, avoiding the area.
For a lost crown, try using dental cement or a small amount of toothpaste to temporarily hold it in place.
Avoid hard or sticky foods until you can reach your dentist.
Bleeding after Tooth Extraction
Rinse with light salt water to help reduce inflammation and soothe the gums.
Use a tea bag as a compress, applying it to the bleeding site for 10-15 minutes to help with clotting.
Maintain good oral hygiene, and contact your dentist if bleeding persists.
